At Goshen Valley, we often talk about the power of a strong foundation. Today, we’re honored to celebrate the man who laid that foundation—our founder, John Blend—as he receives the 50th First Citizen of Cherokee County Award from the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.
John’s journey to this recognition is one of faith, vision, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. More than 30 years ago, he and his wife, Connie, turned their family farm in Waleska into a place of refuge and healing for young people in foster care. What started as a simple act of obedience to God’s calling became Goshen Valley, a thriving organization that has impacted thousands of lives across Georgia.
John has always believed that caring for foster youth and at-risk families isn’t a job for just one organization—it’s a community effort. That belief has shaped Goshen Valley’s partnerships with local schools, churches, businesses, and civic groups, ensuring that every child we serve has a village of support behind them. Under his leadership, Goshen has grown into a nationally recognized model of excellence in foster care, with multiple programs providing safe, loving homes and life-changing resources.
But John’s heart for child welfare extends far beyond Goshen. Through his leadership in Together Georgia and the Georgia Association of Homes and Services for Children, he has been a tireless advocate for policies and programs that improve outcomes for foster youth statewide. His service on the board of the Cherokee County YMCA and other organizations highlights his dedication to strengthening families and building a healthier, more connected community.
Receiving the First Citizen of Cherokee County Award is a fitting tribute to the legacy of impact John has created. His leadership, faith, and relentless pursuit of a better future for vulnerable children continue to inspire us daily.
John, from all of us at Goshen Valley—congratulations! Your vision has changed lives, and we are honored to carry it forward.
