Navigating the Foster Care System: What Every Parent Should Understand

Fostering a child is a life-changing decision—one that requires preparation, commitment, and an open heart. For those considering becoming foster parents, understanding the process can help ease concerns and set expectations. This guide breaks down key steps, from the initial home study to reunification, and includes valuable insights from experienced foster parents and caseworkers.

Understanding the Foster Care Process

1. Becoming a Foster Parent

The journey begins by meeting with one of our Goshen Homes staff for a one-on-one Info Session. We will give you an overview of the foster care system, answer any specific questions you may have and explain the process in depth.

2. Home Study & Training

A home study is a required step in becoming a licensed foster parent. Home Licensing staff assess your living situation, parenting style, and motivations for fostering. Training is very intensive and covers topics like trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and understanding the emotional needs of foster children.

3. Placement & Adjustment

Once approved, families are matched with children based on factors like age preference, special needs, and family dynamics. The adjustment period can be challenging, as children often come with past trauma. Foster parents are trained and supported by Goshen staff to be patient, compassionate, and flexible during this transition time.

4. Working with Caseworkers & Birth Families

Foster care prioritizes reunification when possible. Foster parents play a crucial role in supporting biological families by encouraging visits and maintaining open communication with caseworkers. When reunification isn’t possible, adoption may become an option.

Tips from Experienced Foster Parents

  • Be flexible. Each placement is different, and adaptability is key.
  • Build a support system. Connect with other foster parents, therapists, and caseworkers.
  • Practice patience. Children need time to adjust to new environments and expectations.
  • Take care of yourself. Fostering is emotionally demanding—prioritize self-care and mental health.
