From Foster Care to Success

Inspiring Stories of Former Foster Youth

At Goshen Valley, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive, no matter their background. For many foster youth, the journey from childhood to adulthood comes with unique challenges—but it also comes with stories of resilience, growth, and remarkable success.

In this blog, we are honored to share inspiring stories from former foster youth who have turned obstacles into opportunities and created meaningful futures for themselves.

Waylon – Turning Experience into Service

After aging out of foster care, Waylon chose a path defined by courage and compassion: becoming a firefighter. His journey is a powerful example of how lived experience can inspire a life of purpose and service to others.

This year, Waylon successfully completed firefighter training and earned his certification—a milestone that reflects both his dedication and his desire to protect and uplift his community. Waylon’s story reminds us that true success isn’t measured only by personal achievement, but by the impact we make when we choose to serve others.

“Goshen Valley gave me the opportunity to grow in a stable and supportive environment when I needed it most. They restored my hope in the foster care system by showing that real care and commitment can make a difference. Through their support, my brother, sister, and I were able to stay connected and begin our renewal together. Goshen Valley didn’t just provide a place to stay—they gave us a chance to feel like a family again and build a future we could believe in.” – Waylon

Amon – Strength, Passion, and Purpose

Amon is a driven 19-year-old who joined the Goshen New Beginnings Independent Living Program just a few months ago and is already thriving. Despite the challenges faced in the past, Amon continues to demonstrate remarkable strength, determination, and compassion in every area of life.

Currently a full-time student at Kennesaw State University pursuing a degree in clinical social work, Amon dreams of one day opening a family therapy practice to help others find healing and connection. Amon’s heart for service extends beyond the classroom—advocating for youth in foster care and those transitioning into adulthood through several youth advisory councils dedicated to improving outcomes for young people in care.

Edward – Leading with Purpose and Heart

Edward came to live at Goshen Valley during his 9th-grade year, where he found the love, guidance, and support of the Boys Ranch community. A dedicated student and leader, he graduated in the top 10 of his class, gave a TED Talk about his foster care journey, and went on to attend the University of Georgia. Throughout college, Edward returned to Goshen each summer to lead the Summer Academy Program, mentoring younger residents and giving back to the place that helped shape him. He also volunteered at Goshen events, sharing his story to inspire others and advance the mission.

Now a University of Georgia graduate, Edward is pursuing his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) license and working as a Client Care Associate at SignatureFD. His journey is a powerful example of leadership, gratitude, and heart—and we are proud to call him part of the Goshen Family.

Serving our youth was one of the greatest joys and honors of my lifetime. No other place in our world serves a higher purpose to care for the orphan. Since Goshen has always been my home, working every summer and winter alongside our boys did not feel like work at times, but more of a homecoming of sorts. Don Baines, a spiritual leader and father-like figure in my life, once said we arguably have one of the most important jobs in the world, in which we live everyday to serve our youth to the best of our ability. Wholeheartedly, I was blessed with that opportunity for six years throughout my time in college, and I wouldn’t trade that time and sacrifice for anything. God allowed for me to experience a moment of full-circle perspective that I will cherish as I’ve started my professional career.” – Edward
